!Some information taken from research of Steve Troutman of Klingerstown,
PA.
Alice was born in Hebe, which is situated the the Manhantango Valley,
Jordan
Twp., Northumberland Co., PA. George and Mary while living in Hebe
occupied a
small home located on the south side of the road about fifty-two steps
southeast of David's Lutheran and United Church of Christ. At that time
George
was employed by his half brother Simon Troutman, who was a farmer and
drover,
and who lived about one-eighth of a mile northeast of the village.
Alice attended the local schools, mostly the Noble (Rothermel's), No.4
located about one-half mile northwest of Klingerstown. She also attended
the
Grove (Hebe) School, No. 3 for some time. This school was located about
twothifds of a mile southwest of the homestead, on the Klingerstown-Hebe
road
and along the Trout Run (called Farrella Ruhn by the Pennsylvania Dutch).
The
above were both, one room, little red school houses, typical of the time.
Alice, however, secured a fair education in those schools. She was
trained by
her parents, to do both house and farm work efficiently, and later became
a
model farm woman.
Alice was of medium height and build, neither slim nor stout. She was a
fine
mother and housewife. She was kind hearted, and had a friendly
personality and
was well liked by anyone who knew her.
Alice was an exceptionally good bread baker, at her house bread was seldom
bought from the baker. The fried (egg) bread, with onions and the jelly
rolls
she made were second to none. Alice was a very good cook, and it didn't
take
her long to come up with a very good meal. She was also a good seamstress
and
made a lot of her own clothing.
Alice and John were members of the Troutman's United Evangelical Church.
In
political matters, John was a Republican and Alice never had the
opportunity to
vote.
